Mekke

Mecca, or Makkah al-Mukarramah, is the city that serves as the administrative centre of the Mecca Region in the historic Hejaz of present-day Saudi Arabia.

Mecca lies in the western part of the Arabian Peninsula, in the old Hejaz region, east of the Red Sea.

Mecca was ruled for many years by leaders descended from Muhammad, known as sharifs, and came under the rule of Ibn Saud in 1925.

Having grown very rapidly in this modern period, the city is home to the Abraj al-Bait, also known as the Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, the fourth tallest structure in the world.

Saudi coalition announces missile fired at Riyadh, Ankara condemns Mecca attempt

Arab Coalition Spokesperson Brigadier General Turki al-Malki reported that a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis toward Riyadh on Saturday morning was destroyed by air defenses. Türkiye's Foreign Ministry had previously condemned an attempted drone attack targeting Mecca; the Houthis denied such an attempt.

Foreign Ministry condemns drone attempt on Mecca and attack in Pakistan

Saudi Arabia announced that Houthis attempted a drone attack on Mecca, which the Houthis denied; the Foreign Ministry condemned the attempt and reiterated its support for Riyadh's sovereignty. The ministry also condemned an attack near a mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan's Kohat city.

Türkiye condemns drone attempt targeting Mecca; Houthis deny the claim

Saudi Arabia announced it destroyed a drone south of Mecca on the evening of September 15. Türkiye's Foreign Ministry condemned what it said was a Houthi attempt to target Mecca, while the Houthis denied the claim, saying they had only targeted oil facilities and military bases.

Where reports differ

State media and pro-government press TRT Haber and Hürriyet reported the incident as a Houthi attack attempt targeting Mecca and highlighted Türkiye's condemnation statement along with reactions from AK Party and Communications Directorate officials.
Opposition-leaning and foreign press Evrensel and DW Turkish presented the report as a "claim," and also conveyed Houthi officials' statement that "the claim that Mecca was targeted is a stale lie," as well as the Houthis' counter-claims regarding Saudi airstrikes.
