It is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. It is the capital of Riyadh Province and the centre of Riyadh Governorate. The metropolis, located on the eastern bank of Wadi Hanifa, took its current form in the 1950s after the walls of the 18th-century walled city were demolished.
