European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking in Strasbourg, proposed a social media ban for under-13s and limited, supervised access up to age 15; the plan must still be debated and voted on by the 27 member states.
The plan is part of a global movement joined by more than 20 countries following Australia's ban on under-16s in December 2025. The Commission will reverse the burden of proof, requiring platforms to prove they are safe. The proposal will be discussed and voted on in member states.
