Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality from 2019-2025

Ekrem İmamoğlu is a Turkish politician and businessman who served as mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) from 2019 until his removal from office in 2025. He was determined as the CHP's presidential candidate in the party's primary on March 23, 2025, after which he resigned from the CHP and became the YENİ Party's presidential candidate. He has been held in Silivri Prison since March 23, 2025.

İmamoğlu's official car case adjourned to 23 October

Detained İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu made his defence at the hearing in Silivri and said he had appeared at about 100 hearings. The indictment alleges 122,305 lira 70 kuruş in public damage; the case was adjourned to 23 October.

Ağıralioğlu's conditional support for Yavaş, rejection claim for İmamoğlu

Journalist Sinan Burhan reported that Anahtar Party leader Yavuz Ağıralioğlu could support Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş if a semi-presidential or parliamentary system is adopted, and that they would not meet on the same ground with former İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu. He said a consensus has formed on Yavaş among nationalist parties.

Özel: Mansur Yavaş's candidacy is a very important option

YENİ Party leader Özgür Özel told T24 that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu is a candidate "as long as he can legally be a candidate" and that Mansur Yavaş's candidacy is also "a very important option". Özel said, "They will do everything to prevent Mayor Ekrem from being a candidate"; he stated that he was informed in advance of Yavaş's meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on September 9.

İmamoğlu explains Tuzla case verdict in video, highlights judge change

Jailed İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu released a three-minute video about the 2-year-1-month prison sentence he received on September 11, 2026, in the Tuzla case, in which he had twice been acquitted, and emphasized that the judge had been changed during the proceedings.
