National boxer Hatice Akbaş became European champion by defeating Spain's Laura Fuertes Fernandez in the women's 51 kg final of the European Boxing Championships in Sofia.

Akbaş, a Fenerbahçe athlete competing in the 51 kg category for the first time in her career, won her first European gold medal as a senior. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated Akbaş via a phone call from Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Hamza Yerlikaya.
