The 2nd Civil Chamber of the Turkish Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) ruled that if an engagement ends for a reason other than marriage, jewelry and gifts beyond the customary kind can be reclaimed by the givers.
The ruling was issued on the application of a bride-to-be who called off her engagement shortly before the wedding and applied to a Turkish family court for the return of the gifts. The local court had ordered their return, and the file had been brought before the 2nd Civil Chamber of the Turkish Court of Cassation after the ruling was appealed.
